In this episode of Checkout, we chat to Adam Bouris, CEO and co-founder of booming fragrance brand WHO IS ELIJAH. Alongside his wife, Raquel, Adam has grown the brand from a small homegrown business to into a must-watch indie fragrance label, with exciting plans to break into markets across the Middle East, UK and EU. From his admiration for Gymshark’s steady growth, his reliance on Triple Whale for marketing insights and consultation with his personal bible, Principles by Ray Dalio, Adam shares the inspirations that drive him and his brand forward.

A Yoke of An Impulse Buy: A Poached Egg and Muffin Maker

All of us make spontaneous online purchases from time to time, but Adam’s recent shotgun purchase takes the cake—or rather, the muffin. “I bought this poached egg and muffin maker that was supposed to toast the muffins and cook the eggs at the same time,” Adam recalls. The kicker? “I bought three of them for $60 each, and none of them ever showed up.”

It’s a light-hearted reminder that even ecommerce pros can get swept up and caught out by  alluring Instagram ads. Many of us can relate to the excitement of finding something cool online, only to be let down when it doesn’t show up. It’s a good lesson for ecommerce businesses: no matter how clever or eye-catching your ads are, you always have to deliver on your promises.

Inspiration from a Global Giant: Lessons from Gymshark’s Steady Growth

When asked which retailer inspires him the most, Adam immediately pointed to Ben Francis, founder of Gymshark.

I really resonate with Ben’s story—how he built Gymshark from scratch and grew it into this massive, solid business.

What stood out to Adam was how Gymshark managed to avoid the common pitfalls of being a flash-in-the-pan brand, driven purely by trends. Instead, the company took the time to focus on building long-term growth.

“They’ve built quickly, but they’ve built solid,” he added. It’s an important reminder that growth is not just about chasing trends or short-term wins, it’s about scaling in a way that’s sustainable. Your focus should be on creating a brand with substance, one that resonates deeply with its audience and stands the test of time.

The Tech That Powers WHO IS ELIJAH: Triple Whale

In the fast-paced world of ecommerce, having the right tech stack is crucial, and for Adam, Triple Whale is a standout. “It’s a bit expensive, but once you start to understand attribution, it’s very eye-opening,” he explained. For WHO IS ELIJAH, Triple Whale provides deep insights into which marketing efforts are driving conversions, something that more traditional platforms like Google Analytics or Shopify Analytics often struggle to do accurately.

For a business at WHO IS ELIJAH’s stage, where every marketing dollar counts, accurate attribution is essential for growth. Knowing exactly where conversions are coming from allows Adam and his team to allocate resources more effectively and avoid wasting budget on campaigns that don’t deliver. It just goes to show that when it comes to making decisions about scaling and marketing spend, you’re only as good as your data platform.

Adam’s Essential Reading: Principles by Ray Dalio

When asked for a book recommendation, Adam quickly pointed to Principles by Ray Dalio, a book that has left a lasting impact on his approach to business and life.

It’s a bit of a long book, but it’s really powerful.

He appreciates how Dalio breaks down the bigger picture—offering not just how-tos, but the why-tos behind his principles.

Adam revealed that he’s read Principles multiple times, each time finding new insights and perspectives. “I’ve got all the scribble marks in it and every time I go back, I’ve got a different colour pen with different scribbles on the side,” he said, emphasising how revisiting the book has helped him apply its lessons in real time.

Adam has even fed the book into ChatGPT, asking it questions and using AI to extract more value from Dalio’s principles. It’s a great example of how continually learning and adapting—whether through books, tools, or new approaches—is key to staying ahead.

Balancing Ambition with Downtime: How Adam Stays Grounded

While building WHO IS ELIJAH has been exciting, Adam has come to appreciate the importance of balance. “I used to work long hours, thinking that was the key to getting ahead, but I’ve realised it doesn’t necessarily make you more productive,” Adam shared.  These days, he makes a conscious effort to switch off and recharge, a strategy that helps him come back with fresh ideas and better solutions.

“Some of my best ideas have come when I’ve stepped back and given myself space to think…Taking breaks, whether it’s a weekend away or just turning off the phone for a few hours, helps me come back and look at things from a new angle,” he said.

In an industry that celebrates hustle culture, Adam’s approach serves as an important  reminder that innovation rarely comes from working non, it comes from stepping back and making room for creative problem-solving. After all it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.

Scaling with Strategy and Heart

Adam’s approach to growing WHO IS ELIJAHis both thoughtful and strategic, proving that true success isn’t just about how fast you grow, but how well you manage the journey. Adam’s reflections on global finance remind us that scaling a business comes with complex challenges, but by prioritising building a lasting brand, taking time to recharge and always keeping an eye on the long game, you can achieve great successes. By staying grounded and focused, Adam sets a strong example for how to grow with purpose and passion.

[Ad]: Today's checkout features Adam Boris, CEO of who Is Elijah? Who Is Elijah is a fast growing fragrance brand that is disrupting the market with its genderless approach, beautiful branding and international expansion plans.

Nathan Bush: Adam, thank you so much for joining us on the Checkout. We had an awesome conversation in our main chat around what you and Raquel are building with who is Elijah taking on the world, about to up and move with the family to the UK before taking on the us Amazing story so far and I think everyone should be going out to check out what you're doing. But also we talked about the product pages and some of the cool stuff you're doing with products. So lots in that chat. But we're here to talk about you and learn a little bit more about you. Five quick questions. Number one, what's the weirdest thing you've ever bought online?

Adam Bouris: This was funny because I was thinking about it today and about two years ago I bought, I never received it, but I bought this poached egg and muffin maker. So like you put an egg in it and an avocado, like obviously it wasn't real, but you put an egg in it and avocado and two slices of muffins and apparently just gave you like a toasted muffin with eggs. And I was like, oh my God, I have to have this. So I bought like three of them for like 60 bucks each and they just, they never showed. They never showed up.

Nathan Bush: Oh, was it like a random late night Instagram purchase?

Adam Bouris: If someone gets me with one of those things, it's like, you know, I'm just gonna go for it. I'm not even gonna go and look and see if they're real or fake. I'm just gonna go for it.

Nathan Bush: There's your opportunity, mate. Little, you know, all your spare time.

Adam Bouris: Little side hustle.

Nathan Bush: Egg and muffin maker. All right, number two, which retailer has most inspired you recently?

Adam Bouris: Yeah, I think lately for me it's been Ben from Gymshark. Yeah, I think that his story is like very cool and I really resonate with him and what he built and how he built it and where he's going with it. So yeah, I'm following along his story closely but yeah, I'm looking up to him a lot at the moment, so.

Nathan Bush: Good. It's such a consistent story too. It's not like a big flash in the pan, all bird style and then disappearing. Like hasn't, hasn't just been a trend driven business. It's been build quick but build solid over time.

Adam Bouris: Yeah, it's great.

Nathan Bush: All right, number three, name a piece of tech that you or your e commerce business couldn't live without.

Adam Bouris: I feel like what it is now is Triple Whale. It's a little bit of an expensive piece of tech, but businesses of our size think probably any smallies a bit overkill. But when you start to understand attribution and you see it for what it actually really is, it's very eye opening. And Triple Whale is like the place for that.

Nathan Bush: And are using Triple Whale to make your decisions more so than Google Analytics or Shopify analytics or any of those other platforms.

Adam Bouris: Yeah. When it comes to like attribution. Yes, like and it's just fascinating that all of these platforms are just taking attribution that's not theirs and you know, pumping their own tires up. So it's sort of you lose trust. I mean, I've never really been trusting of a lot of these places anyway. And you're always trying to figure out who's telling the truth. But when you see it in Triple Whale like that and then they have the creative cockpit on top of it which analyzes the, the performance of the content inside the channels. It's like I think any businesses, it's like 10 million and up, you know, ecom, that should do it.

Nathan Bush: Amazing. And we talked in the main app where you had your advertising outsourced with an agency, you brought it back in source yourself, got into the detail, understood everything and how it works for your business and have just started outsourcing it again most recently especially as you expand. And I bet having something like Triple Whale there set up by you and how you want to use it so that's the source of truth for everyone. Agencies meta you to determine what's successful and not is really powerful.

Adam Bouris: Yep.

Nathan Bush: All right, Number four, can you recommend a book or a podcast that our listeners should immediately get into?

Adam Bouris: Look, it's a bit of a long book, but it's Principles by Ray Dalio. For me, when I read books, I don't really read, like technical how to's. I like to read bigger picture how to's and why to's, I guess. And I reread it recently, you know, and I've got all the scribble marks in it and everything. And each time I come back, I've got different color pen with different scribbles and different sides. So, yeah, I think it's really powerful. And then I think what people should do. This is what I did. You can pump it, feed it into chat GPT and ask it to an answer. Asking questions and wanting the response from the book that way so you can bring it to real life. People should do that too, with that book.

[Ad]: So you've got a PDF version of

Nathan Bush: it that you just pump straight into GPT.

Adam Bouris: Yep.

Nathan Bush: Yep. Beautiful. Does it make you want to think like, I read it and then I was like, oh, I should really be creating my own principles. So. Absolutely. Ray Dalio's principles. There's a lot in there that I go, yep, that's a great one. That's a great one. That was a great one. But I'm like, hey, how do I document my principles over 20, 30, 40 years?

Adam Bouris: Yeah, I agree. Look, they did it from the beginning, but yeah, it's. Yeah, definitely.

Nathan Bush: Love it. All right, last one I've got for you. Adam, what's your biggest challenge today?

Adam Bouris: I would say right now for us, it's like, it's global finance. For me right now, again, I was a cabinet maker not that long ago, but global finance and how much it's actually going to cost to. To launch into these places and whether we need external funding or not based off our current situation. So, you know, we're having lots of conversations at the moment about that. And it's one of those decisions you can't take lightly. And if you make a decision to go one way and hypothetically bring on finance, you can't undo that once you do it. So, yeah, that's where I'm at at the moment.

Nathan Bush: It's next level scale. Isn't it? Very exciting for you and the team at who is Elijah? Adam, thank you so much for joining us on the checkout today.

Adam Bouris: No worries. Great to be here
