In this episode of Checkout, we sit down with Liam Millward, Co-Founder and CEO of Instant, the platform transforming customer engagement and automation for brands like Toys R Us and Stax. Liam runs us through the cutting-edge tech driving Instant’s success, the brands, books and podcasts that inspire him, and the challenges he faces while scaling a fast-growing team.

Learning from the Best: Retailers That Set the Bar

When it comes to finding ecom inspiration, both Liam looks to Brittany Saunders who started FAYT the Label for her ability to drive growth organically through content.  “Absolutely love what she’s been doing with organic content, etc., via her channels recently, just driving so much growth,” Liam said. He admires Brittany’s ability to engage her audience without over-relying on paid ads and looks forward to collaborating with her in the future. “I’m excited to be speaking with her in LA in a couple of weeks, actually. She’s killing it.”

He admires how Brittany has been able to create genuine engagement with her audience, relying on authenticity and consistency rather than just throwing money at paid campaigns. “Content-led strategies allow brands to build stronger connections with their customers, and it’s becoming more crucial as consumers increasingly value authenticity over polished ads,” he added.

Tech That Makes It Happen: Tools Liam Swears By

No modern business can run without the right tech stack, and for Liam there are many tools that keep his businesses firing on all cylinders, but HubSpot got a special mention. “We use HubSpot a lot—it basically runs our whole company,” Liam explained. From tracking leads to managing customer relationships, HubSpot helps Instant keep everything efficient and organised as they continue to grow. Whether it’s a customer relationship platform or an eCommerce powerhouse, having reliable, scalable technology is the backbone of any thriving business.

Keeping Sharp: A Must-Read Book For Entrepreneurs

When chatting about what books and podcasts they’re into, Liam said he swears by Ben Horowitz’s business classic, The Hard Thing About Hard Things”, which he calls a must-read for any entrepreneur.

It’s brutally honest about the challenges of being a founder, and it gives you real insights into what it takes to push through the tough situations.

For any entrepreneur facing the inevitable hurdles of running a business, this book offers practical guidance and inspiration.

Facing the Growth Curve: Biggest Challenges

With success comes new challenges, and Liam admits to feeling the pressure as his businesses continue to grow. For Liam, the toughest part is finding and retaining top talent as Instant expands.

“Our team is growing incredibly quickly, but finding truly great people—especially software engineers and marketing pros—is always the toughest part.

As a company focused on innovation, Instant relies on assembling a strong, skilled team to continue pushing boundaries in customer engagement and automation. As Instant pushes into new markets, Liam believes the need for skilled employees will become even more critical.

Building Success Through Tech and Customer Insights

Whether it’s implementing cutting-edge tech to improve efficiency or navigating the complexities of leadership, Liam shows us that sustainable growth comes from making smart decisions and staying adaptable. While the right people and tech is a huge part of his success, it must be paired with a mindset that balances ambition with a deep understanding of customer needs. Every business owner should see every challenge as an opportunity to learn, grow, and ultimately thrive.

[Voiceover]: Welcome to the checkout. We catch up with previous add to cart guests and ask them five quick questions to get to know them better and leave you with a little extra inspiration to get through your Friday. Here's your host, Bushy.

[Ad]: Today's checkout features Liam Millwood, one of Australia's youngest tech founders and the driving force behind Instant. From launching his first venture at just 13 to raising the largest pre seed round funding in Australian history, Liam has had a truly remarkable journey. And he's still in his early 20s. In this episode we get to hear some fun insights from Liam, including his favorite tools for running Instant, his biggest challenges as a leader, and how he's navigating the wild ride of being a young entrepreneur.

Nathan Bush: Liam, welcome to the Checkout. Thank you for joining us. We had a brilliant main conversation there with yourself and Sean from Lelo Active where we discussed everything Instant and in particular your new audience's product, which allows retailers to send targeted communication via email to visitors to their website who they may not have normally been able to reach. But we're here to learn a little bit more about you. I've got five quick questions. Number one, what is the weirdest thing that you've ever bought online?

Liam Millward: You asked me to think about this and I, I'm not sure. I'm sorry, I'm gonna, I'm gonna have to fail the first answer, you've got nothing.

Nathan Bush: Oh my goodness. That means you've got something. Usually when people say they've got nothing, they've got something. All right. Number two, which retailer has most inspired you recently?

Liam Millward: Well, I said on the podcast College and Co and Nike, but third one would be fake the label and Brittany Saunders absolutely love what she's been doing with like organic content, et cetera, by her channels recently. Just driving so much growth. Excited to be speaking with her in, in LA in a couple of weeks, actually. So she's killing it.

Nathan Bush: Very cool. I've heard that from a few people. I've never met her, but I've heard that from a few people recently that hold her up as one of the leaders of the pack. So that's fantastic. Number three, name a piece of tech. Oh, here we go. I think I've planted this one for you. Name a piece of tech that you or your business couldn't live without.

Liam Millward: Well, if it was. If we were an e commerce business, it would of course be instant, but in our case it's. We use HubSpot a lot. Basically, this manages our whole company.

Nathan Bush: Yeah, makes sense. And number four, can you recommend a book or a podcast that our listeners should immediately get into?

Liam Millward: My favorite book. And I always say this is the hard thing about hard things. It's just. Yeah, it's an incredible book. You should definitely read it.

Nathan Bush: It's going to be incredible one day when you get to write your book. If you've got the velocity of all these years of what you've crammed into two or three years, imagine what you're going to get to by the time you get to write your book. All right, number five, what is your biggest challenge today?

Liam Millward: Oh, I would say our biggest challenge is like our team is growing incredibly quickly, so we're always on the lookout for incredible talent. It's so hard to find truly incredible people. And so, yeah, I would say that's our constant battle in any particular area. Software engineers, great marketing people. Yeah, everything that every team is growing in the company and I think so many businesses would relate to that. You know, our team is incredible, but finding more incredible people is always the search. So yeah, but we, we, we keep our eye out.

Nathan Bush: Love it. Liam, thank you for joining us on the checkout.

Liam Millward: Thanks, Nathan.

[Ad]: If Liam's story has piqued your interest, head back to the main episode where we explore his incredible entrepreneur journey. And from humble beginnings working out of a caravan to growing instant into a must have e commerce tool for many Liam covers with me and Sean from Lelo Active. Everything from retargeting strategies to rapid scaling tips, we go deep on their new product instant audiences and uncover the success that many retailers such as the Oodie, Fate, the label and Toys R Us have had by implementing it. Thanks for listening.
