Nathan Bush: Today's checkout features Tracy Newman from Bean Ninjas. Bean Ninjas are financial accountants, bookkeepers and educators, but cool ones as you can tell by the name and and specialize in seven figure e commerce businesses. They've also got a very keen understanding of technology which when hooked up right makes all those numbers work correctly. Tracy Newman from Bean Ninjas, welcome to the Checkout. We've just learned a lot around your tax planning and the fundamentals of accounting for e commerce businesses which has been eye opening. Going to ask a few questions to learn a little bit more about you.
Tracey Newman: Sure.
Nathan Bush: Number one, what is the weirdest thing that you've ever bought online?
Tracey Newman: Oh golly, I'm going to pick on someone in my family who will not be named. But this person is a cyclist and has a little friction issue between the seat and a part of his anatomy. And he has been known in the past to buy some aids that assist him with his comfort.
Nathan Bush: That's very delicately put. It's nowhere near the weirdest thing we've ever heard. I hope your husband doesn't get offended. Okay, number two, which retail fad do you wish was history?
Tracey Newman: Oh golly, retail fad. That was history. I'm a little over the anime, I must admit. I've got kids that that are addicted to it and so we've got all sorts of e commerce providers that are selling anime collectibles. I shouldn't say I wish it was finished, but I just don't understand it at all.
Nathan Bush: Oh yes, I hear you. And number three, who is your favorite retailer?
Tracey Newman: Well, in the e commerce space and actually this isn't a client. I don't even know them. But I'll put out a little bit of Girl Crushes is probably a local Byron Bay business called C and Sprout. They sell. They just really do an amazing job on social media and about environmental impact. And if you're listening, I'd love to connect.
Nathan Bush: Our pantry is full of seed and sprout containers. They do a really great job. Can you. Number four, can you recommend a book or a podcast that our listeners should immediately get into?
Tracey Newman: Okay, well, maybe I'll tip a great friend of mine named Heather Smith who is an influencer in the Xero space. I think she calls herself a hype girl for accounting. She's written a few books around Xero but she also has a podcast called Cloud Stories and she will feature lots of add ons and apps in the Xero ecosystem and it's well worth a listen.
Nathan Bush: That's a great extension of our chat earlier. Fantastic. And am I right in understanding that beaninjas have their own podcast as well?
Tracey Newman: Yes, we have a podcast as well, but I must confess that because I personally have only merged into being Ninjas since January, I'm not able to give it a proper plug in that I'm not sure what it's called, although I've listened to it quite a few times. But it's Meryl Johnson, the owner of Bean Ninjas. And yes, she interviews all sorts of people in the business world and there's a mostly there's a recurring theme of E commerce, so please check that out as well.
Nathan Bush: Brilliant. We'll put a link in the show notes as well. Last one I've got for you. The future of retail is online nicely.
Tracey Newman: Full stop
Nathan Bush: and counted for.
Tracey Newman: Yes, that's right.
Nathan Bush: Tracy, thank you for joining us on the checkout.
