In this episode of Checkout, we chat with Jared and Jimmy, co-founders of Plant with Willow, a tech-driven plant care brand designed to stop plant lovers from becoming plant killers. With their innovative sensors already used by plant enthusiasts across 28 countries and partnerships with major retailers like Bunnings, Jared and Jimmy are watching their business blossom in the indoor plant care space. We chat about their quirkiest purchases, their favourite tech tools and dig into what drives them as leaders and the exciting milestones on the horizon.

From Tea Emergencies to Everyday Essentials

While we all have our quirks when it comes to online shopping, Jimmy’s story takes it up a notch. One night, working late, he realised he was out of his beloved English tea and decided he couldn’t go on without it. What’s the solution when you’re desperate? Uber Eats, of course! But things didn’t quite go as planned. “I Uber Eats English tea bags at 11 o’clock at night,” Jimmy recalled.

I paid for PG Tips and got a box of Mandrake tea because they were out of stock. Couldn’t even have a cup of tea!

Jared, on the other hand, admits his online shopping habits are a bit more straightforward. “Honestly, I’m more of a clean-cut buyer—nothing too out there,” he said. “Clothes, tech, and the usual stuff, that’s about it for me.” Even though Jared may not have as wild a story, it’s clear that both co-founders know the value of eCommerce convenience.

Retail Brands That Inspire: We the Wild and Vitable

Jared and Jimmy are constantly on the lookout for innovative brands that align with their vision for Plant with Willow and two standouts are We the Wild and Vitable. We the Wild is a plant care brand offering organic products designed to keep indoor plants thriving. What really impressed Jared about this brand is how they’ve mastered the art of upselling and post-purchase engagement.

“They’ve got really cool integrations on their confirmation pages,” Jared shared. “It’s not just ‘thank you for your order,’ it’s ‘here’s what else you can buy,’ with a time-limited deal. We’d love to start looking at that for Willow.” This strategy isn’t just a sales tactic—it’s about keeping the customer engaged and providing extra value when they’re already excited about their purchase.

Jimmy also highlights the power of personalisation, drawing inspiration from Vitable, a subscription-based vitamin service that tailors its offerings to each customer. “I get my packet a day, and it’s got my name on it. Just an amazing customer experience…It’s those small touches, like seeing your name on something, that make the experience special” Jimmy explained.

Receiving a product with your name on it creates a connection, turning a simple transaction into a personal interaction. This level of personalisation is something that Plant with Willow aims to bring to their own customers.

For Jared and Jimmy, these brands highlight a crucial lesson: post-purchase experiences and personalisation aren’t just bonuses—they’re essential to building long-term customer relationships.

Tech Essentials: Custom PCs and Google Home Setups

When it comes to the tech they can’t live without, Jimmy and Jared have different favourites, but both are passionate about staying connected and productive. Jimmy is obsessed with his custom-built PC, which he says is his sanctuary. “I love tech. I built my PC, and I’m always tweaking it and adding bits. It’s a beast of a PC, and I spend a lot of time in my office around it,” he said proudly.

Jared, on the other hand, can’t live without his Google Home setup, both at work and at home.

We’ve got a Google Nest speaker in every room, and it’s got music blaring all day. As soon as I get home, it’s ‘cast Spotify to all speakers.’ It’s become a part of daily life.

For him, it’s about creating a lively and connected environment, whether in the office or at home.

Books to Escape and Podcasts That Inspire

In their downtime, Jared and Jimmy are both avid consumers of content that fuels their creativity and focus. Jared recommends the fantasy novel The Way of Kings as his must-read. “I’m a massive fantasy nerd. If I’m not working on plants or the business, I’m reading,” Jared admitted. The epic fantasy series offers him the perfect escape from the day-to-day hustle.

Jimmy, on the other hand, finds inspiration from the High Performance podcast. “It’s based out of the UK and has elite athletes and business leaders talking about their mindset. I love taking away those tips on how they operate at such a high level every day,” he explained. These insights help Jimmy stay motivated and focused on improving his business and personal performance.

Prioritising the Big Ideas: The Challenge of Time

For Jared and Jimmy, the biggest challenge they face is balancing all the ideas and opportunities that come their way with the limited time available to them. “The amount of stuff we’ve got going on is insane,” Jared said. “The challenge is just how much can we actually get done. Whether that’s growing the team or delivering on all these ideas, it comes down to time and prioritising.”

Jimmy adds that prioritisation is key as they scale, especially when so many ideas feel like good ones. “Every idea we have is a good idea—or almost every one. But we’ve got to figure out which ones to act on now and which can wait,” he explained. For the Plant with Willow team, staying focused on their mission—keeping plants alive—remains the core priority.

Growing a Tech-Driven Brand with Purpose

Jared and Jimmy’s success shows that staying focused on solving a clear problem—like keeping plants alive—while embracing personalisation and thoughtful engagement is key to building lasting customer relationships. For entrepreneurs, the takeaways are simple: focus on your core mission, listen to your customers, and stay adaptable as your business grows. With persistence and a clear vision, even niche products can blossom into big success stories.

Nathan Bush: home technology designed to keep houseplants alive. I mean, who hasn't had that problem? Their startup has captured the attention of plant lovers and tech enthusiasts alike with a successful Kickstarter campaign. And now, hot off the press, a relationship with Bunnings. Jared and Jimmy, welcome to the checkout. Great to have you guys here. We've had a great conversation on our main episode around everything that you're building with Plant With Willow. We covered everything from how you created your Kickstarter campaign for your plant senses to stop people from killing plants, all the way through to your recent contract and distribution deal with Bunnings, which is hugely exciting. But we're here to learn more about you both. I've got five quick questions for you. Number one, what's the weirdest thing that you've ever bought online? Jimmy, kick us off.

James Shamim: Not buying much online, but I did Uber Eats English Tea Bags. Working very late at night, I went to make a cup of tea in Perth and there was no tea bags left and I was like, I need my English tea. So Uber eats a box of PG Tips.

Nathan Bush: Was the delivery driver confused?

James Shamim: No, but the worst part of this story is I paid for PG Tips. I got a box of Mandarin tea because they were out of stock and then I couldn't even have a cup of tea either.

Jared Carlin: Oh, no.

Nathan Bush: I thought you were going to say you went to put the milk in and there's no milk.

Jared Carlin: No.

James Shamim: Well, that would have been worse. Yeah, that had been a worse nightmare.

Nathan Bush: What are you.

Jared Carlin: Jared, Honestly, I do not know.

Nathan Bush: This is like yeah, you're a clean cut buyer.

Jared Carlin: I'm a clean cut. I don't often treat myself to to goods so outside of clothes and some tech that's me.

Nathan Bush: Well I'm going to kick you off with number two. Which retailer has inspired you most recently?

Jared Carlin: Yeah, I think we the world which do some pretty cool plant care products. I was recently buying some stuff for them and definitely something that we want to focus on from a DTC side of things. They've just got a really great post purchase kind of that add to cart checkout confirmation page upsells and that's definitely. Yeah just personalized deals on confirmation pages rather than generic. Thank you for your order. It's here's what else you can buy time limit around it. So. So just some really cool integrations there that we would love as Willow to start looking at and from a personal point of view definitely get suckered into that. Yeah, yeah, go on. Yeah. One more.

Nathan Bush: Do you find that the horticultural industry is very advanced when it comes to online and digital? Like is there much inspiration out there for you to borrow from or do you have to go to other categories?

Jared Carlin: There's some amazing and well constructed brands I think I find from that perspective maybe not so from the tech outside of the one I suppose that I'd recently experienced but definitely aspirational from content, from styling, from things like that. There's some pretty cool brands.

Nathan Bush: Jimmy, any retailers inspired you?

James Shamim: Yeah, Vitable actually from a customer experience perspective they took vitamins or vitamins. Whatever you say over here I'm going to say vitamins, vitamins and I got, I subscribe to it and then I get my packet a day and it's got my name on it and I'm just like that is just what an amazing customer experience and and fair play to them. I think like us as Willow we look at how we can improve our customers experience every day and just those little tiny things that were like in my vitamin packet I'm like oh look it's me.

Nathan Bush: So yeah, that's cool.

Jared Carlin: Yeah, showing your age there with your vitamin packets.

James Shamim: Yeah, I know.

Nathan Bush: All right, number three, name a piece of tech that you or your E commerce business couldn't live without. Jimmy, I'll stick with you there.

James Shamim: A piece of tech. I'm probably going to say my PC that I've built. Like I said I'm a tech person, I love tech and I was like I'm going to build a PC and I think my partner complains how much time I spend in my office around my PC. I just love it. I'm always tweaking with it and adding little bits and whatnot. So I'm going to go on my PC.

Nathan Bush: I could imagine there must be a beast of a PC.

James Shamim: It is. It's a beast of a PC in terms of internally, but I don't have all the lights and stuff like that. But I've got a really cool case. I can't remember where it's from, but it's got like a wooden front to. It's really aesthetically pleasing. It's just really cool. But yeah, I'm on it all the time.

Nathan Bush: That's awesome. What about you, Jared?

Jared Carlin: I think for home and our office, I couldn't live without Google home setup. You know, we very much, you know, music blaring in the office. Every room there's a little nest speaker or a display unit or, you know, that whole ecosystem set up as soon as I get home. It's straight, you know, cast Spotify to a speaker or to all speakers. I think it's really. It shows when you go visit other people's offices and it's just quiet.

Nathan Bush: It's.

Jared Carlin: Yeah, I definitely couldn't do it. So. Music.

Nathan Bush: Yeah.

James Shamim: Beware.

Nathan Bush: Be worried if the connected home wasn't important for you.

Jared Carlin: Yeah. I mean, wi fi. Take it back a level. Love it.

Nathan Bush: All right, number four. Can you recommend a book or a podcast that our listeners should immediately get into?

Jared Carlin: Jared, I am a massive fantasy nerd. I read all so Way of Kings. Start with that. That's a great book. One in a pretty amazing series. Otherwise you'd have to do another hour podcast if you wanted all my suggestions.

Nathan Bush: All right, but that's. That's a good, like zone out for you. Is it?

Jared Carlin: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm not plants or business. It's. It's made a book. If authors could keep up and actually release the next books instead of waiting nine years plus. Georgia Martin looking at you.

Nathan Bush: Yep. Give up on that one.

James Shamim: Yeah. What about you, Jimmy? I was going to say up to cartoon. Outside of it, I don't know. It's high performance podcast in. It's one based out of the uk. They get a lot of elite athletes on there and business and actors. I recently had Matthew McConaughey on there, but just around how people get into that mindset of high performance. I'm not a person who ever talks about podcasts, to be honest. I'm not that person who says, hey, you should listen to this. But I took away some really Cool tips. Especially from elite athletes. So because they have to be operated a certain level of mentality every single day, right?

Nathan Bush: Yep, yep. Good tips, good tips. All right, last question I have for you both. What's your biggest challenge today? Time.

Jared Carlin: It has to be. It's. Yeah, just the amount of stuff we've. We've always got underway or coming forth. It's. Yeah, just honestly, it's. How much can we actually get done? Whether that's a capacity, whether that's growing the team to deliver on it. I think it's less. I think Jimmy might touch on it, but we consider ourselves to be great problem solvers, so challenges are certainly welcome and we deal with every day. It's just how long it takes to kind of get everything done. Right.

James Shamim: Yeah. To echo that to a degree, I'd say prioritisation time is time and it's how you prioritize. Every idea we have internally is a good idea. Not. But let's say we have so many ideas, so many things we want to do. Adjacent industries. But how do you prioritize? And I think that is the biggest challenge currently is as we scale is making sure that we're prioritizing the right things.

Nathan Bush: And I can imagine that flows onto culture too, because you both strike me as great ideas people, great executors. But then as that flows onto the team, I bet the team get infused with all these other ideas and things they want to do and you kind of might have to play the bad guy sometimes to go actually, no, no, no, no, no. We can't do all that focus. So there's that fine balance between inviting new ideas and prioritizing the right things because there is limited time and resources.

James Shamim: Yeah, absolutely. We have such a creative thinking team. Honestly, I couldn't speak highly enough of them. The work that goes in and the quality of what comes out, honestly, is amazing. But everybody is this forward thinking and that type way higher. But yeah, comes down to we all have to. We all have to be accountable to each other and we prioritize in the time and that is the biggest challenge for everybody in the business.

Jared Carlin: Yeah, it's definitely, you know, our core values as a team is around making the best product that we can and. And then around, you know, that. That collaboration piece about delivering on it. Right.

Nathan Bush: Beautiful. Jimmy, Jared, thank you so much for joining us in the checkout and thank you for your mission on saving houseplants all over the world.

James Shamim: Amazing. Thank you very much.

Jared Carlin: Cheers. Thank you.

[Ad]: To hear more from Jared and Jimmy,

Nathan Bush: jump back into episode 4. Hundred thirty nine where they share how Plant with Willow went from being a Covid idea to being in connected households all over the world. They tell us about their recent success of being stocked in bunnings and how they prioritise all of the opportunities in front of them. Oh, and they let us in on the leading cause of houseplant deaths in Australia. And I bet you're guilty of it too.

[Ad]: Thanks for listening.

Nathan Bush: And until next time, keep adding to cartoon.
